North Ilinizas Climb
2 Day- tour
The Ilinizas are are two peaks located 55km Southwest of Quito. Iliniza Sur (5250m) is famous for being the sixth highest mountain in the country whilst Iliniza Norte (5126m) is the eighth highest. The Illiniza is an ancient volcano to the south of Quito which split into 2 separate peaks over 5000 years ago. This tour climbs the northern peak which reaches an altitude of 5,126m. Illiniza Norte is a moderate trek with an exhilarating but easy scramble to reach the top. It offers superb views of the mighty Cotopaxi and surrounding volcanoes. This climb is perfect for acclimatization and for those aspiring to climb Cotopaxi.
Itinerary
Day 1
Departure from Quito at 9 am in private transportation. 3-hour – drive south to a site called La Virgin at 3900 m on the slopes of the North Ilinizas. From there on you will hike for approximately 3 to 4 hours with all your equipment to the refuge at 4650 m. After arriving at the refuge you have lunch- the afternoon is free to relax and prepare for the climb tomorrow.
Day 2
You have to get up early at 5 am. The climb to the summit of North Ilinizas at 5126 m takes about 3 hours and you need special climbing equipment. The first hour is up a sandy scree slope or more adventurous parties can take on the ridge directly. You then traverse the “Paso De Muerte” followed by a scramble to the summit. After having a short rest on the top and enjoy the view you descend to the parking lot “the Virgin”. You will be back in Quito at approximately 1 to 2 pm.
