1st day: Quito – Cotopaxi
Pick up from your hotel. Then we drive South through the Avenue of
Volcanoes. . First stop the Cotopaxi National Park, located in the base of the
Cotopaxi Volcano. Cotopaxi means “throat of fire” in indigenous language
the incredible eruptions helped this surname, considered the highest active
volcano in the world. First we visit the interpretation center and Limpiopungo
lake (paramo grasslands / Ecuadorian equivalent of the arctic tundra), drive up
to 4800m (15.000 ft) and trek up to Jose Rivas mountain climbing refuge (1
hour hiking). You will have the opportunity to touch and lay on the snow then
down hill biking to the Limpiopungo lake.

2nd day: Cotopaxi- Quilotoa – Quito
After breakfast, early in the morning we depart to Alausi, tour begins with a visit
to a local indigenous market at Saquisili (Thursdays only) or in Pujili (Sundays
only).The drive to Laguna Quilotoa – an amazing emerald lagoon inside a
volcano crater at the height of 3800m – displays a beautiful view of the Andean
mountains, passing the ancient canyon of Zumbahua and many indigenous
towns and farmlands. The trip through the indigenous villages of the area
provide a fantastic chance to see the real Ecuador. Before lunch we visit a local
aboriginal home where you have the opportunity to interact with the inhabitants.
The tour includes a steep hike down to the lagoons shore. For the return you
will be using a mule.
The weather in the area of the Laguna is unpredictable so please bring warm
and waterproof clothing. It is important that you are well prepared for 3800m, so
we recommend acclimatizing at least one day around 3000m.
