The tour into the Sangay national park is a trek in a beautiful wilderness area with excellent opportunities for trekking and climbing. The Nationalpark stretches from the eastern cordillera of the Andes to the jungle and will enchant you with a fantastic variety of different landscapes and climate zones. Subtropical rainforest merges into cloud forest, followed by Andean grasslands and finally ending in the everlasting ice of the glaciers of the 5000meters high mountains.
The Sangay Volcano (5230m) is one of the most active volcanoes of South America. The long hike to the foot of the volcano is quite demanding and requires a good physical fitness and an adventure spirit. The trekker or climber has to negociate with difficult terrain sometimes but the reward of hiking through this amazing wilderness is unique and unforgettable.

Itinerary
Day 1
Departure in Quito at 8 am. Heading south the avenue of the Volcanoesf for about 5-6 hours to a community called Guarhualla. With 3800m is this the starting point of the trek. Setting up the camp, dinner and rest.

Day 2 
After breakfast and packing up you trek to the next camp Plaza Pamba. The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours depending on your rhythm. On your way you will pass small communities and great landscapes with rivers, valleys and typical plants and flowers -and if you are lucky you can observe a wide range of animals. As well you will pass the highest point at 4200 m and then descend to the base camp where you have dinner and a rest.

Day 3 
After breakfast and packing up the equipment you continue your trek at 9 am towards the foot of the volcano Sangay, to the base camp, called Campamento Playas at 3900 m. With a little luck you should be able to see beautiful scenery and the spectacular Sangay in a state of eruption. The terrain will get more difficult, you will have to cross several rivers, climb and descend various hills and the dense vegetation will assume the nature of the Páramo. In the afternoon you arrive at the base camp that is located at the southwest side of the volcano. Dinner and rest in the camp.

Day 4
After breakfast and getting ready with packing up the equipment you start hiking back towards the base camp Plaza Pamba. And if you are lucky you will have some stunning views at the Sangay volcano. Arriving at the campsite you have to set up the camp, will have dinner and have a rest.

Day 5 
After breakfast and packing up you hike back to the starting point of the tour Guarhualla for about 4 to 5 hours. There you will pick the transport to either Riobamba, to spend the night there or diectly back to Quito.

NOTE: The Sangay Trek can be done in 5 or 6 days, depending on your rhythm. For person, who do not want to walk too fast or are not well acclimatized we recommend to do the tour in 6 days.
